THE CONSUMER CREDIT CODEHow the Code will Benefit YouThe Consumer Credit Code governs consumer credit transactions across Australia. Credit providers such as banks, building societies, credit unions, finance companies and other businesses which provide credit regulated by the Code, are required by law to disclose information about interest rates, fees, commissions and other relevant information before you enter into a contract. While the aim is to prevent many of the credit problems faced by consumers, the Code recognises that it is still important to protect consumers if they get into trouble. If you lose your job or are sick, you should discuss your situation with your credit provider. You may have the right to ask for your repayments to be reduced. A court can also order changes to a contract if it is considered unjust.
